Butterflies

We have been finding out lots about butterflies, exploring books and the internet to find answers to our questions.

We have been busy writing fact sentences about butterflies, and creating art about them. Look at our colourful reports!

Today we watched Youtube movies of caterpillars hatching from eggs, shedding their too-small skins, becoming cocoons, and then hatching as beautiful butterflies. We also saw a butterfly lay eggs on leaves.

We managed to answer all our questions about butterflies.

Next we want to find out about dragonflies. Where do they come from?

Does anyone have ideas about interesting questions about dragonflies that we might want to investigate?

Do you know any interesting facts about dragonflies you might want to share?

What Lives Here?

Room 9 have been wondering about little creatures, and have thought of lots of interesting questions to explore. The first one we tackled yesterday was:

What is an insect?

We thought... a fly, an ant, a ladybug, a slater, a beetle, a spider might be insects.

We knew a tiger wasn’t an insect. We thought that might be because tigers growl and insects don’t growl.

We looked at books and we found out...

Insects have 6 legs (so, a spider, a tiger and a worm aren’t insects)

Insects have 3 body parts

They have a skeleton on the outside (like a shell, not like bones)

Some insects have wings. They have antennae.

They lay eggs. Insects change - for example, from an egg, to a caterpillar, to a chrysalis, to a butterfly.

Patrick Visits Room 9

Today James’s dad brought Patrick the dog into Room 9 for a visit, and James shared him for News.

Afterwards, we wrote some stories about Patrick, or about our own dogs.

One of the stories is made up. Can you tell which one isn’t true?
